The Intimate Empire

The Intimate Empire
By:Gillian Whitlock
Published on 2000-02-01 by A&C Black

By means of contextualized readings, this work argues that autobiographic writing allows an intimate access to processes of colonization and decolonization, incorporation and resistance, and the formation and reformation of identities which occurs in postcolonial space. The book explores the interconnections between race, gender, autobiography and colonialism and uses a method of reading which looks for connections between very different autobiographical writings to pursue constructions of blackness and whiteness, femininity and masculinity, and nationality. Unlike previous studies of autobiography which focus on a limited Euro American canon, the book brings together contemporary and 19th-century women's autobiographies and travel writing from Canada, the Caribbean, Kenya, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. With emphasis on the reader of autobiography as much as the subject, it argues that colonization and resistance are deeply embedded in thinking about the self.

A Single Man

A Single Man
By:Christopher Isherwood
Published on 2013-11-19 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux

Welcome to sunny suburban 1960s Southern California. George is a gay middle-aged English professor, adjusting to solitude after the tragic death of his young partner. He is determined to persist in the routines of his former life. A Single Man follows him over the course of an ordinary twenty-four hours. Behind his British reserve, tides of grief, rage, and loneliness surge—but what is revealed is a man who loves being alive despite all the everyday injustices. When Christopher Isherwood's A Single Man first appeared, it shocked many with its frank, sympathetic, and moving portrayal of a gay man in maturity. Isherwood's favorite of his own novels, it now stands as a classic lyric meditation on life as an outsider.

Fred Astaire Style
By:G. Bruce Boyer
Published on 2005-02 by Editions Assouline

No other man has influenced American style more profoundly than Fred Astaire. Replacing the stiff-suited, aristocratic uniform of the day with his looser, more democratic look of tweed sport jackets and easy cut flannels, Astaire became a new model for the Century. Nonchalance, natural charm and effortlessness would now replace the pomp and circumstance of men's style that preceded it.

Longarm 306: Longarm and the Pirate's Gold

Longarm 306: Longarm and the Pirate's Gold
By:Tabor Evans
Published on 2004-04-27 by Penguin

One infamous pirate has sailors shivering in their timbers… He’s a quickdraw, a cow-punch, and a lady’s man. But lawman Custis Long will be the first to admit he’s no sailor. So when duty brings him down the Texas coast to investigate the fishy disappearance of a loaded ship, the landlubber reckons he’ll need a crash course in the maritime arts. And if a voluptuous lady-captain wants to teach him, all the better… Tales of Bloody Tom Mahone, a murderous Gulf pirate, have kept many a sailor planted on solid ground lately. Locals claim they’ve spotted his black masts—even Bloody Tom himself—searching for his legendary treasure. But the cutthroat’s been dead around eighty years—and Longarm’s answers may well lie in the depths of the ocean…

The Family Gene

The Family Gene
By:Joselin Linder
Published on 2017-03-14 by HarperCollins

A riveting medical mystery about a young woman’s quest to uncover the truth about her likely fatal genetic disorder that opens a window onto the exploding field of genomic medicine When Joselin Linder was in her twenties her legs suddenly started to swell. After years of misdiagnoses, doctors discovered a deadly blockage in her liver. Struggling to find an explanation for her unusual condition, Joselin compared the medical chart of her father—who had died from a mysterious disease, ten years prior—with that of an uncle who had died under similarly strange circumstances. Delving further into the past, she discovered that her great-grandmother had displayed symptoms similar to hers before her death. Clearly, this was more than a fluke. Setting out to build a more complete picture of the illness that haunted her family, Joselin approached Dr. Christine Seidman, the head of a group of world-class genetic researchers at Harvard Medical School, for help. Dr. Seidman had been working on her family’s case for twenty years and had finally confirmed that fourteen of Joselin’s relatives carried something called a private mutation—meaning that they were the first known people to experience the baffling symptoms of a brand new genetic mutation. Here, Joselin tells the story of their gene: the lives it claimed and the future of genomic medicine with the potential to save those that remain. Digging into family records and medical history, conducting interviews with relatives and friends, and reflecting on her own experiences with the Harvard doctor, Joselin pieces together the lineage of this deadly gene to write a gripping and unforgettable exploration of family, history, and love. A compelling chronicle of survival and perseverance, The Family Gene is an important story of a young woman reckoning with her father’s death, her own mortality, and her ethical obligations to herself and those closest to her.
